Melissa graduated with her Kinesiology degree from Michigan State University in 1997, and then obtained her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Central Michigan University in 2000. Melissa continued her education and became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Sports and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in 2004. Shortly after receiving her CSCS certification, Melissa began studying for the McKenzie Spine Certification and earned her CertMDT in 2008.
Melissa has a great deal of experience working with athletes, spine disorders, and patients with neurological, and balance disorders. Melissa has had the unique experience of working side-by-side with two Grand Rapids female orthopaedic surgeons, as well as working directly with well known and respected Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors. Melissa began working with collegiate and recreational athletes at Michigan State University as an intramural group fitness instructor in 1996. For the past 20 years, Melissa has taught at local fitness facilities such as the YMCA and currently with MVP Sportsplex. Melissa has been an avid triathlete since 2001 and has completed 2 Ironman distance triathlons, 8 Half Ironman triathlons, as well as numerous olympic and sprint distance races.
Melissa joined her husband Jim at Owens Physical Therapy Specialists in October 2010. She believes wholeheartedly in physical therapy and feels that each patient should have quality one-on-one time with his or her physical therapist. Melissa has experienced many common injuries that endurance athletes face, and has rehabilitated herself back to her sport in which she still continues to regularly compete. When not working or exercising, Melissa enjoys watching collegiate sports and spending time with her husband Jim, and her kids Ryleigh and Eli.
